Teaching
Learners are unique: they are made up of different personalities, cultural backgrounds, social and emotional needs, preferences, life experiences, values, passions, beliefs, habits, intellect, etc. As a teacher, I strongly believe it is my responsibility to meet learners where they are and aid in the discovery and/or rediscovery of learners’ potentials. It is my duty to be respectful of my students and to create an environment which allows them to freely express themselves, to be seen, and not to be excluded because of their uniqueness. I also believe that students need to be held accountable for their learning and behaviors in the learning environments I facilitate.
My beliefs about teaching and learning have influenced the way I run the K-12 and college classrooms, and workplace training environments I have facilitated. I have strived to ensure students identify the value of the lessons learned in the courses I have taught, and for them to leave my classroom feeling accomplished with the goals they set for themselves. Generally, I have been successful and I could not be more thankful to my students for being cooperative.
Throughout my years of teaching, I have had the privilege of students inviting me into their worlds and vice versa. Together, we have had fruitful experiences which have challenged me to learn more about myself, about others, about life in general, but most importantly, to consistently work on my teaching craft to enhance students’ learning. I have learned that every classroom and group of students is different. Hence, I need to be flexible and ready to adjust my teaching styles to my students’ needs.
I believe that there are more lessons to learn about teaching. There are more teaching beliefs I may form along the way. I look forward to those positive experiences yet to be unfolded, the experiences which may reshape my teaching beliefs. Until then, feel free to glance through my teaching portfolio which contains a list of my most relevant teaching experiences greatly influenced by my current beliefs about teaching.
